Preserving memories is more than just holding on to sentimental moments; it is about cherishing our family history and ensuring that our family legacy lives on. Family memories, captured through photographs and stories, are the threads that connect us to our past and help shape our future.

If you are old enough to be a grandparent, you likely have at least 30 years of photos in boxes, albums, or other containers. You may also have inherited photos from previous generations. And you probably have around 20 years of digital photos scattered across multiple devices.

Think back to your own childhood. Do you have any memories of looking through photo albums with your parents, grandparents, or other relatives? I know I do. I have fond memories, and I remember being fascinated by clothing styles, customs, and traditions that previous generations in my family too part in. Have your grandchildren been able to have any experience like that?

If you’ve put photos into albums or created photo books, maybe they have, and that’s great! But if you haven’t, it may be because the project is just too overwhelming to think about, or you’re planning to do it later. Whatever the case, in this article I want to discuss why I believe that organizing your photos - sooner rather than later - is one of the most important things you can do for your grandchildren.

Why Preserving Memories Matters

Family photos hold a special place in our hearts because we take pictures of who and what we love. We love our family, our pets, our homes, and vacation spots, and even a few special items that have significance. We take the pictures, and then, do we enjoy them anymore? Or do they live in obscurity in boxes or on devices unless we accidentally stumble upon them?

Here are three reasons I believe it’s important to organize and preserve our family photos:

  • To honor our ancestors

  • To improve emotional health

  • To create a family legacy

Teach Your Grandchildren to Honor Their Ancestors

Family photos can help our grandkids develop a sense of identity and belonging.

In today's fast-paced world, it is crucial to teach our grandchildren the importance of honoring their ancestors. As globalization continues to bring different cultures together, it becomes even more essential to instill in them an appreciation for their own heritage as well as the heritage of others.

Non-American cultures have various ways of honoring their ancestors to this day, such as Days of the Dead in Mexico, the Obon Festival in Japan, or Samhain in Celtic cultures. If your family has strong roots in a culture that has such traditions, I hope that your grandchildren can participate and benefit from them.

In American culture, where families often no longer live close together, the connection to one's roots can easily be lost, and we have no uniquely American tradition designed to honor ancestors. However, by teaching our grandchildren about their ancestors and the traditions they upheld, we can help our grandkids develop a sense of identity and belonging.

Honoring ancestors goes beyond simply remembering names and dates. It involves understanding their values, beliefs, and cultural practices. This is why it’s so important to capture any stories that you can, and not just stick the photos into pocket albums or onto thumb drives. In this way, you can bridge the gap between generations and pass down valuable lessons that have shaped your family history.

Create Better Emotional Health with Family Photos and Stories

It is important to recognize the profound impact shared family photos and stories can have on the emotional well-being of children. Research conducted by Marshall Duke and Robyn Fivush of Emory University in 2001 (both before and after the terrible events of 9/11) showed that when children are exposed to family history, they develop higher emotional intelligence (EQ), self-esteem, and resilience. In fact, the more these children knew about their own family’s history, the stronger their sense of control over their lives, the higher their self-esteem, and the more successfully they believed their families functioned.

The act of sharing family stories and photos with children helps them develop a stronger sense of identity and belonging within their family unit. It allows them to understand their roots, heritage, and the values that their family holds dear. This knowledge gives them a sense of control over their lives, boosting their self-esteem and making them feel more secure in who they are.

Furthermore, when children perceive their families as functioning successfully through the shared stories and photos they encounter, they gain a greater sense of trust in their familial relationships. This trust forms a solid foundation for building healthy relationships with others outside the family unit as well.

Digital Photo Memories Are Also Important

A digital frame like one from Nixplay makes it easy to display family photos. Find out more.

One other way that grandparents can ensure that family photos benefit their grandchildren is to make sure that photos of the children themselves are displayed or easily accessible in their home and other familial homes where they spend time. With today’s digital photography, many family photos never leave devices and are rarely seen.

Yet, a study conducted by Tulane University in 1975 found that children who see photos of themselves have higher self-esteem than those who don’t. It doesn’t matter if they are framed on the wall or in accessible albums or photo books. Children who grow up surrounded by images of love and happy memories develop a strong sense of identity and belonging within their family unit. So in addition to organizing and preserving your older printed photos, it’s also important to get those digital photos into your grandchildren’s lives as well, particularly the ones featuring them.

I’m going to take all of this one step further. Our world seems to be in chaos right now, on many different fronts. It is my firm belief that by giving our grandchildren these important tools of emotional health, they will, in turn, improve the state of the world. As they mature, they will bring their high emotional intelligence, resilience, and self-esteem into their work and personal relationships to create a better world for all.

Organized Photos Are Good for You, Too

Face it.  We’re not getting any younger.  Having an organized photo memory collection can bolster our own emotional health as well.  Numerous studies have shown the positive effects of viewing photos on senior citizens and the elderly.  Reflecting and remembering the people and events who have gotten you to where you are today can have multiple positive effects, such as

  • Relieving pain,

  • Encouraging optimism,

  • Reviving memories, and

  • Giving perspective.

Pass Down Your Family Legacy

Preserving family memories and passing down traditions to future generations is a cherished endeavor for many. Organized photo collections act as family heirlooms that hold not only visual representations of our loved ones but also the stories and memories behind them.

With changes in photography technology, as well as generational differences, it has become essential to find ways to safeguard these precious moments. By organizing photo collections and capturing the stories, we can ensure that our legacy of preserved memories remains intact for years to come.

They will create a narrative that tells the story of our family's journey through time. From milestone events such as weddings and birthdays to everyday moments captured on film, each photograph holds significance and contributes to the tapestry of our shared history.

Moreover, passing down organized photo collections fosters a sense of belonging within families. It allows younger generations to feel connected with their ancestors by seeing familiar faces or recognizing shared traits across different eras. This connection helps shape their understanding of who they are and where they come from.

By investing time and effort into organizing photo memory collections, we create lasting legacies that go beyond mere images. We pass down not only photographs, but also the stories behind them - stories that shape our family's identity and provide a sense of continuity. Through the preservation of these memories, we ensure that future generations can connect with their heritage, fostering a deep appreciation for their roots and a stronger sense of belonging. By recognizing the significance of these moments and stories captured in photographs, we can ensure that they continue to hold meaning for years to come.
