Three Ways to Celebrate Halloween Without Trick-or-Treating

Grandparents Can Be the Superheroes This Halloween
Picture
What will Halloween look like for your grandchildren this year? Because of Covid, Halloween parties are out, and trick-or-treating is being discouraged in many communities. There are a lot of little ghosts and goblins that are going to be disappointed this year—unless someone comes to the rescue!

Grandparents, here’s your chance! Why not start a new family Halloween tradition with one of the following ideas?
Family zoom costume party
Send out invitations to the extended family for a Zoom Halloween costume party. Let everyone vote on their favorite costumes and show off their jack o’lanterns. Have a dance party (Monster Mash, anyone?) or have Uncle Jim read a spooky story. It’s even more fun if everyone orders pizza or makes chili. One grandmother I know sent each family a party pack of plates and decorations so everyone felt like they were at the same party!
Care Package
What’s your grandchild’s favorite treat? What’s yours? Send a few of each. Add an age-appropriate Halloween book and this neighborhood scavenger hunt. Do you have any photos of their mom or dad dressed up for Halloween? Or ones of you? Make copies and enclose those, too. Write a little note on one of our printable Halloween postcards, and ship them off this week! Ask mom or dad to save the box until the day before Halloween. If you can video chat while they open it, you can talk about the photos and why you chose the treats you did. Need some book ideas? Check out these family favorites:
Family Movie Night
There are multiple ways to host a virtual watch-party, and Halloween is a perfect time for settling down on the couch with popcorn, treats and a Halloween movie on Netflix. Depending on the age of your grandkids, a scary movie may be out, but that doesn’t mean you can’t find one that everyone will enjoy. This list of Halloween movies has a wide variety of family-friendly options.

Not sure how to host a watch-party? Here’s a good run-down of your options.

Though Halloween 2020 may look different because of Covid, each of these ideas will make sure that kids have great memories to look back on.
